1. America Loves Erasure
We’ve been spoon-fed the idea that greatness is achieved alone. But that’s some bullsh*t.
Who's the first American hero I learned about in school? George Washington! As Americans, we’ve been spoon-fed stories about George Washington and his greatness from day one. But what about the people who backed him up? We don’t hear much about them. When the rest of the story is hidden to focus on one person, most often a white male. That’s good ol' fashioned American erasure.
How it shows up for YOU in 2024
Have you ever sat at home admiring someone else’s social media and started to feel bad about yourself? These people have entire teams of geniuses behind them without you knowing, and you’re at home comparing yourself and feeling bad. It’s so unfair and reinforces the insidious idea that if you can’t do it alone, you’re not good enough. And that’s just a lie. Here’s how I know...
2. You Haven’t Spent Enough Time with Really Wealthy People
I used to be a nanny for a wealthy couple on the Upper East Side of New York City and what I saw go on in that house was a real shock for me.
They had people working for them in every way possible. Yeah, they could afford it, but it wasn’t about money; it was about growth. I was a battery in their life, pushing their agenda forward while they focused on making more money and enjoying their projects. That’s when it hit me—this is how you do it. It wasn’t a luxury for them; it was a necessity for growth.
Why This Was a Block for Me and Might Be one for You
Growing up if there was something we could do ourselves, we were expected to do it ourselves. "I’m not paying somebody to do X, Y, Z!"— The refrain was, "There's always someone out there trying to take your money. Sound familiar? And if we did hire help for some reason we didn't talk about it too much because as number 3 states...
3. It's a dirty secret no one should EVER Share
We hide if we do get help so we don't appear weak or, even worse, uppity.
Shout out to my operations manager Rebecca—without her, my business wouldn’t exist. While I’m out here dreaming and creating and getting my kids to school, someone has to keep the machine running. And for many of you, it’s the same. You have amazing ideas, but when it comes to execution, you get tired. You think it’s because your idea isn’t good, or worse, that you’re LAZY. But it’s likely because you’re not supposed to be the one executing. You’re the idea person; you need to partner with someone who excels at execution.
The nasty way this holds us all back
When you’ve been taught that there can only be one of you in the room, it’s tempting to keep your success methods to yourself, especially when we're supposed to be ashamed about needing help in the first place. But how successful could we all be if we got the help to own the room together?
4. Is CONTROL another reason you feel you have to do everything alone?
If you have spent years cultivating an image to perfection it's terrifying to hand that over to someone else.
Last year, during Black History Month, my content was more popular than ever. Why? Because I had Rebecca and Therry working on it for me. They went places I was too scared to go, and the results were incredible. We are social creatures; we thrive in groups. When you deny yourself help, you’re missing out on the beauty of shared success.
How to address this mind set issue right now
Instead of imaging all the ways someone else can embarrass you online, think about what could happen if they did a better job than you ever could. And remember...
you don’t need to be perfect. Your imperfections are far more compelling than a perfectly polished image.
5. Our best have bought into this TERRIBLE system Staying in the shadows because you’re too afraid to ask for help serves the status quo
If those of you who are educated, successful, and capable continue to toil away in obscurity believing, you have to do everything alone, we have no hope! Who else is going to be an inspiration for the rest of us? And I know most of you have enough on your shoulders, but that's the whole point of this post. You don't have to do it alone. But you damn well have to do it if you feel it in your heart like I do.
Push back against a system that’s trying to hold you back. Break out of the shadows and show the world what you’re truly capable of!
